Former Professional Athletes Coaching Youth & High School Sports

Many professional and accomplished athletes call Colorado home after their sports career ends. Why not settle down and grow roots in Colorado? Colorado has 300 days of sun annually, a vibrant food scene, year round outdoor activities, and the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rapids, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Denver Outlaws, and Colorado Mammoth….

Once their playing career has ended, coaching is a natural career transition for some of these athletes; coaching keeps them involved in the game they love, provides a moderate income and a way to continue to build their brand and resume.

Former athletes generally start coaching youth athletes in club and high school sports. It provides an education on coaching, communication, and administration – it is also a quick way to find out if they want to coach and deal with all of the daily non-coaching tasks (scheduling, parents, administration, licensing, parents, time away from family, and again parents).

Prior to researching this article, we assumed the number of former professional athletes coaching high school and club would be evenly split. Although the list below is a sample and not comprehensive, the majority of former athletes coach youth/high school soccer and lacrosse.

Former professional basketball players, coach, but many use their brand and resources to start a youth basketball club. Football and baseball are different; it was difficult to identify former professional baseball and football athletes coaching club and high school. Reason, based entirely on conjecture: (1) One season sports (2) dominated by the “dad” coach (3) Less club structure (4) Less need to earn an income post playing career (5) Location:Colorado.

All three kids have played soccer (Competitive, Development Academy, ECNL, High School) and basketball (Competitive & High School).
